Dorothy Parker and Bathtub Gin

Dorothy Parker was a bad ass and when I was a kid I wanted to be her. She had a reputation for her caustic wit and I coveted that reputation all through high school and college. Her sarcasm was incredibly comforting to me when everyone was mad at me for being too bitchy (they definitely had a point but whatever I'm totally a lot nicer now).
For those of you unfamiliar with Dorothy Parker you need to understand that the woman was a god damned genius. Her poetry is some of the only poetry I can actually stand (I'm not super into feelings) and her short stories are exactly what short stories should be. She's smart, dark, and cynical and that combination produced some revolutionary work in a revolutionary time period. I feel like a lot of people have an obsession for New York in the 1920's but its hard not to be attracted to a hedonistic era when everything was coming to a boil in one of the greatest cities in the world (a big cliche but I fucking love New York). It's such a cliche thing to say (again) but Dorothy Parker was the voice of her generation.
So if you can get your hands on a copy of The Best of Dorothy Parker. Her most famous short story is probably Big Blonde. Its a sort of caricature of the life of a party girl. Big Blonde is one of those stories that means something different to you depending on what point in your life you're at when you're reading it.
My favorite poem from this collection is Unfortunate Coincidence.
By the time you swear you're his,
Shivering and sighing,
And he vows his passion is
Infinite, undying -
Lady, make a note of this:
One of you is lying.

Gin was definitely the drink of the 20's and it's my fave. There are a billion Gin cocktails named after Dorothy Parker but this is my personal favorite combo
Some good gin, some lemon juice, a little bit of st. germain and some rosemary. Throw it all into a shaker with some ice, shake it up and pour into a glass. I do not believe in measuring stuff usually so just mess around with it and measure with your own heart, you can never go wrong with more gin!
